Patti Hughes didn't set out to build an e-commerce empire. She set out to make things that made people happy - and it turns out, that simple mission is exactly what the world wanted.

Patti sat down with the Know Your Ship podcast, hosted by eHub, to talk about the journey behind Natural Life: the decisions that shaped us, the strategies that have kept us growing, and the unconventional thinking that continues to set us apart. It's one of the most honest conversations she's had about how this brand actually works - and we think it's worth your time.
Here are three things we loved from the episode:
Investing in People Who Live the Mission
Natural Life has never been a brand that prioritizes corporate pedigree over cultural fit. Patti has long believed that the best people for this brand are the ones who genuinely connect with what we stand for - and that those people are worth investing in, developing, and growing from within.
In the episode, she talks about why nurturing internal talent who truly understand the Natural Life spirit consistently outperforms the alternative. When the people building this brand are the same people who believe in it, that authenticity reaches every corner of the customer experience. It's not a hiring strategy so much as a values statement.
Some of our exec team sat down for an interview as well!

Why We Walked Away from Wholesale
At one point, Natural Life products were carried in more than 10,000 stores worldwide. By most measures, that's success. But Patti made the deliberate decision to pivot away from that wholesale model and build directly around you - our customer.
Going direct-to-consumer meant reclaiming the margins that make it possible to reinvest in quality and creativity. More importantly, it meant owning the relationship. The ability to connect with our customers personally, to control the experience from first click to front door, and to build something that feels genuinely ours — that was worth more than the distribution footprint.
It was a gutsy call. And it's one Patti stands behind completely.
The Morning Chirp as a Business Tool
Most brands rely on formal market research to understand what their customers want. Natural Life has always done it differently.
The Morning Chirp - the daily inspirational message we share with our community - has become one of our most valuable feedback loops. The way people respond to certain messages, the ones that get saved and shared and commented on with genuine emotion, tells us something no focus group ever could. It tells us what actually resonates.
Patti talks in the episode about how those real-world signals shape inventory decisions, product development, and creative direction. It's a deeply human approach to data - and it works because our community shows up for it every single day.
