Creating the Perfect Boho Bedroom!

A boho bedroom is a bed piled high with prints that don't match but look like they were made for each other. Start with the bed (it's the biggest thing in the room!), mix sheet prints you love, layer on a quilt or fringe bedspread, add pillows and a throw, then finish with warm light and a few little treasures that have a story. No perfectly matched set required. 🌼

Our founder Patti says it best: "I love climbing into my fresh, clean bed with mixed up prints!" The best bedrooms feel like a deep breath at the end of a long day. Cotton sheets that make you smile, a quilt that came all the way from India, a pile of pillows you have to move before you can climb in... It's the little things! And every one of our favorite boho bedroom ideas starts in the same place... the bed.

Boho bedding: start with Mix & Match Cotton Sheets

Your bed does most of the decorating in any bedroom. Our Mix & Match Cotton Sheets are 100% cotton, sooo soft, and they get even softer with every wash. Every fitted sheet, flat sheet and pillowcase is sold on its own, so nothing on your bed ever has to match!

Try a floral fitted sheet with a striped flat sheet, then add pillowcases in a third print that pulls one color from each. Golden Marigold with Jaipur Stripe? Groove Floral Navy with Blue Floral Stripe? Yes and YES. Every time you change your sheets, you get a whole new bed.

In her post about building a bohemian bed, Patti told us she owns one or two of every pattern and "it's so much fun to pick out a new combination each week." One reviewer summed up why so many of you love them too: "It's hard to find 100% cotton sheets, plus to find ones that are patterned."

Layer on quilts, bedspreads & all the fringe!

Now for our favorite part... the top layer!

Go for the fringe. Our Boho Fringe Bedspread in Florence Border is 100% cotton with a textured weave and long, shaggy fringe on three sides. We are OBSESSED with that fringe! It also comes in prints like Shibori Stamps Indigo, Dahlia Rows Chocolate and Brocade Tapestry Cream, with matching shams and Euro shams to finish the whole bed. One customer who has done her entire bedroom in Natural Life wrote, "I love that I can mix and match everything."

Add a quilt with a story. Every Vintage Kantha Blanket Quilt starts as old saris from India and is finished by hand with Kantha stitching, so no two are alike. You won't know exactly which colors you'll get, and that's half the fun! One reviewer called hers "a total dream for any boho, whimsical sort of aesthetic." Fold it at the foot of the bed or layer it right over your bedspread.

Want something plush? Our Velvet Quilt in Twilight is velvet you can use all year round, and it's made for lazy Sunday mornings and one more episode in bed.

Love a pulled-together look? Aspen Patchwork Burgundy comes as a fringe bedspread, shams, a Euro sham, a beaded velvet throw pillow AND a double-sided throw blanket. Pair it with sheets in a totally different print and it still looks like it all belongs together. Find them all in Quilts, Duvets & Bedspreads.

Boho bedroom colors & how to mix prints

There's no single boho color palette, and that's what we love about it. A few combinations that always feel happy:

  • Warm & earthy: marigold, rust, chocolate brown and cream. Think Golden Marigold sheets under a Dahlia Rows Chocolate bedspread.
  • Jewel tones: navy, teal, plum and deep indigo for a moody, snuggle-in room. Try Groove Floral Navy sheets with a Shibori Stamps Indigo bedspread.
  • Soft & sweet: blush, mauve and sage with lots of cream. Pink Retro Calico sheets with a Brocade Tapestry Cream bedspread are so pretty together.

To mix prints without it feeling busy, repeat two or three colors across everything and change up the size of the prints: one big statement print (usually your bedspread or quilt), one stripe and one tiny ditsy floral. If the colors talk to each other, the prints will too!

Boho bedroom decor: pillows, walls & a warm glow

Pile on the pillows. A boho bed always has a few more pillows than it needs. Mix shapes and textures: velvet, corduroy, tufted and fringed. A backrest pillow turns your bed into the best reading spot in the house. Find them all in Pillows, Blankets & Bedroom Accessories.

Drape a throw. Toss our Cozy Coverlet Blanket in Brimfield Patchwork across the foot of the bed and let the patchwork do the talking. It's big enough for a king bed or two movie-night snugglers!

Dress the window. A Printed Curtain Panel turns a plain window into one more pretty print in the room.

Give your toes a soft landing. A colorful Chenille Rug in Wildflower next to the bed makes getting up in the morning a little sweeter. The Wildflower print comes in 2' x 3', 5' x 7' and a 2' x 8' runner.

Make the walls yours. Hang a few framed prints and photos, and add wall hooks for your favorite hat, a necklace or two, or a woven bag. Everything you love can be part of the decor.

Add a warm glow. Trade the overhead light for a little lamp on the nightstand, string lights around the headboard or a sun catcher in the window that throws rainbows across the room.

Finish with little treasures. A trinket dish for your rings, a bud vase with a few fresh flowers, a stack of favorite books by the bed.

Little rooms, big happy: dorms, guest rooms & kids' rooms

Boho loves a little room, as long as it feels snug, not stuffed. A few small boho bedroom ideas we love:

  • Let the bed be the star. Bold bedding does the decorating, so walls and floors can stay simple.
  • Size up your bedspread. On a Twin bed, a Full/Queen Boho Fringe Bedspread drapes down the sides for that layered look.
  • Heading to college? Mix & Match fitted and flat sheets come in Twin/Twin XL, the standard dorm bed size. Our post on how to make your dorm room feel like home has even more ideas.
  • Go up, not out. Adhesive wall hooks and framed art keep your nightstand and dresser clear.
  • Let her pick! Kids love choosing their own sheet combos, and it makes bedtime more fun.
  • Make guests feel at home. A fringe bedspread, a Kantha quilt at the foot of the bed and a soft throw say "welcome, stay awhile."

Boho bedroom questions, answered

How do I make my bedroom look boho?

Start with colorful, patterned bedding, since the bed is the biggest thing in the room. Layer a quilt or fringe bedspread over mix-and-match sheets, then add pillows in different textures and a throw at the foot of the bed. Finish with warm lighting, a rug and a few treasures you love on the walls and nightstand.

What colors go in a boho bedroom?

Boho bedrooms usually mix warm, earthy colors like marigold, rust and cream with jewel tones like teal, navy and plum. Soft blush, mauve and sage are so pretty too. Pick two or three main colors and repeat them across your sheets, bedspread and pillows so the room feels pulled together.

How do you mix patterns in a boho bedroom?

Repeat a few colors across every print and vary the size of the patterns. Pair one large statement print, like a bedspread or quilt, with a stripe and a small floral. Sheets sold separately, like our Mix & Match Cotton Sheets, make it easy to try a new combination every week.

Is boho decor still in style?

Yes! A room full of colors, prints and handmade treasures you love never really goes out of style. And since nothing has to match, a new quilt or a fresh pair of pillowcases gives the whole room a new look.
